There are two connections to the mainland; one via driving over one of the longest bridges in the world or taking a car ferry.
Northumberland Ferries: Ferry service is available from Caribou Nova Scotia to Wood Island PEI. Ferries leave every 90 minutes and takes about 75 minutes from port to port. It provide a scenic and pleasant cruise along the Northumberland Strait. Fares are paid only when LEAVING the island. Driving directions from Wood Island PEI (also from Charlottetown PEI) to The Big Yellow House...
Take Route 1 towards Charlottetown. Once you enter Charlottetown (about a 40 minute drive from Wood Island). You will cross the Hillsborough Bridge, keep following Route 1 into the center of Charlottetown. Keep following Route 1 into the center of town Route 1 turns inot Grafton Street. Take a right onto University Ave (which still is Route 1). Once on University, take your third Left, this is Euston Street. Stay on Euston Street until your sixth (6th) right North River Rd (Route 236) Follow North River Road .. you will pass a residential area, then you will come to Wal-Mart® before Route 1. Cross over Route 1 and stay on North River Road. It becomes Lower Malpeque Rd after Route 1. Stay on Lower Malpeque Rd until the very end. This is the intersection of Route 2. Take a left and follow Route 2 for 1/2 mile until the first set of lights. This is Route 7. Take a right on route 7 towards North Rustico Cavendish. Follow Route 7 for about 12 km thru North Milton, Wheatley River, and Oyster Bed Bridge. At Oyster Bed Bridge keep straight following signs towards North Rustico, Cavendish ...Route 7 becomes Route 6. Stay on Route 6 for about 10 km, through Brackley , Cymbia, and South Rustico. You will pass signs for the Rustico Resort Golf Course, and Cafe St. Jean. Then you will pass the South Rustico UltraMart Gas Station and Gallant Food Market on the left. From that point it is 3km to Route 258 BE CAREFUL .. Route 6 is VERY CURVY throughout this section !!! Bear left onto Route 258 towards New Glasgow... The Big Yellow House is at the bottom of the hill on the right hand side #110 .. right before the creek !!!
Drving time from Wood Island 60 minutes with no tractors... 75 to 90 mintues with tractors !
Driving time from Charlottetown: 20 minutes with no tractors 30 to 40 with tractors .... just enjoy the scenery !Confederation Bridge: The recently constructed Confederation Bridge, http://www.confederationbridge.com , was started in 1994 and finished in 1997. It is approx 13 km long and it connects Jourimain Island, New-Brunswick with Borden PEI and provides a quick (approx 12 minutes to cross) , easy and dramatic access to the Island.
Driving directions from Conferation Bridge/ Borden-Carelton (also Summerside, New London, Cavendish PEI) to the BIG YELLOW HOUSE:
From the bridge take Route 1 towards Charlottetown/ Summerside. Approx 10 km the road splits.. Route 1 towards Charlottetown and Route 1A towards Summerside. Follow 1A towards Summerside... Stay on 1A for approximately 15km.until you reach the outskirt of Summerside and you reach the intersection of Route 2 Tignish, Kennington. Take a right onto Route 2 east towards Kennington, Charlottetown. Stay on Route 2 for about 8 km until you the center of Kenningston. At the center you will be at a set of lights and Petro Canada Gas Station will be on your left. At this light, you will keep straight into Route 6 towards New London, Stanley Bridge and Cavendish. You will stay on Route 6 for 35km thru New London (Irving Gas Station - 12 km from Kennsington), Stanley Bridge (Stanley Bridge Country Resort, Spot O' Tea Restaurant, PEI Aquarium- 16km from Kennsington). After you pass Stanley Bridge, Route 6 hooks to the left at the top of the hill. KEEP FOLLOWING Route 6 . You will next pass through the summer resort town of Cavendish (National Park, Beach, Rainbow Valley Amusement Park - 21km from Kennsington) After Cavendish, you will pass the fishing village of North Rustico (Fisherman Wharf Lobster Suppers - 28 km from Kennsington). After North Rustico, stay on Route 6 for 7km until you see sign for Route 258 towards New Glasgow. Bear right onto Route258 ...The Big Yellow House is at the bottom of the hill on the right hand side #110.. right before the Creek !
